Senator Chris Murphy Announces Federal Funding for University of Saint Joseph
West Hartford, CT (10/12/2022) — US Senator Chris Murphy visited the University of Saint Joseph to announce $900,000 in federal funding for interprofessional education at USJ. These funds will support renovation and equipment costs needed for the development of a Interprofessional Health Education Center (IHEC) at USJ.
Interprofessional health care is the coordinated care of patients by a collaborative team of health care providers including physicians, pharmacists, and nurses, with the necessary expertise to contribute to each patient's treatment plan.
The new Center will allow USJ to develop curricula and programming for interprofessional training of students in graduate and undergraduate Pharmacy, Physician Assistant (PA), Nursing, Nutrition, Public Health, Exercise Science, Social Work, and Counseling/Applied Behavioral Studies programs.
Interprofessional health care enhances the patient experience, improves population health, reduces costs, and improves the work life of health care providers, including clinicians and staff. While interprofessional health care typically includes physicians, nurses, nutritionists, pharmacists, and physician assistants -specifically trained to treat physical health- patient care often includes social workers, behavior analysts, and counselors/therapists.
