USJ Women's Tennis Tabbed ITA All-Academic Team; Five Blue Jays Named ITA Scholar-Athletes
West Hartford, CT (07/17/2023) — The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) women's tennis team was recognized by the International Tennis Association (ITA) and was named an ITA All-Academic Team for the 2022-23 academic year, it was announced by the organization on Wednesday, July 12. Additionally, five women's tennis student-athletes were individually honored for their hardwork in the classroom this past year and earned the designation of ITA Scholar-Athlete.
In order to be named an ITA All-Academic Team, the Blue Jays had to meet the following requirements:
- Have a team grade point average of 3.2 or above (on a 4.00 scale),
- All student-athletes included should be listed on the institutional eligibility form, and
- All varsity letter winners should be factored into the cumulative team GPA for the current academic year
In order to be named an ITA Scholar-Athlete, USJ student-athletes had to meet the following requirements:
- Have a grade point average of at least 3.5 (on a 4.00 scale) for the current academic year
- Be listed on the institutional eligibility form
Senior Julia Michaud (Bristol, Conn.), junior Kathleen Gilland (Wethersfield, Conn.), sophomore Jenna Griffith (Higganum, Conn.), and freshmen Gia Alvarez (Meriden, Conn.) and Liliana Garcia (Wethersfield, Conn.) achieved those requirements and represented USJ on the ITA Scholar-Athlete list.
Overall, 1,204 Division III women's tennis student-athletes were named an ITA Scholar-Athlete, and 160 Division III women's tennis programs were awarded the ITA All-Academic Team distinction from across the nation. USJ was one of just two teams from the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) who earned ITA All-Academic Team honors accompanying Simmons University.
